POWDER The Skier's Magazine の「Skier's Choice Award」からわかるICELANTICのスゴさ!【受賞部門第２弾】

今回の記事は前回「18/19 ICELANTIC モデルは多々アワード受賞してるけど、そのAWARDで一体なに？！なんの賞なの？」説明した、今年度の「賞」についての続編です。
前回の記事ではこれらの賞を受賞することによって、どう意味があるのか・・・
そしてどれだけ大きな機関が考え・企画・授与しているのかを説明いたしました。

今年一番受賞数が多かった、FREESKIER MAGAZINE の「Editor’s Pick」についてもどんな賞なのか説明いたしましたね。

前回はFREESKIER MAGAZINEの「EDITOR’S PICK」についてフィーチャーしましたが
今回は　Powder Magazine の「Skier’s Choice Award」について説明していきたいと思います。

POWDER “The Skier’s Magazine”とは

POWDER The Skier’s Magazine (以下：POWDER MAG）は、1972年にJake and Dave Moe （ジェイク・デイヴ　モエ氏ら）が設立した、40年以上連続発行されている歴史あるバックカントリー・パウダースキー専門雑誌だ。

豪華な編集チーム

何より凄いのは、その圧倒的な写真から構成されるPOWDER MAGは「写真集」と言っても過言ではないくらいの素晴らしいクオリティー。
本国では月刊誌になっており、購読してお店に飾ったり（表紙がシンプルでかっこいい）したりして、わざわざバックナンバーを追って、再度購入するファンも多い雑誌だそう。

そしてなんと、本雑誌のフォトディレクターはDavid Reddick氏。
もちろんフォトグラファーとしても最前線にいる人物だが、何より世界最大級の国際写真展、REDBULL ILLUME （レッドブルイリューム）の審査員としての顔も持っている。

それ故、POWDER MAG は写真にこだわり、圧倒的アーティスティックな雑誌に仕上がっている。

さらには、年に一度、その年の「Gear Guide」も発行している。
日本にも「Bravo Ski」とかがあるようにシーズン前に発行される我々スキーヤーにとってありがたい情報誌だ。
それに今年度は「Skier’s Choice Award」にIcelantic（アイスランティック）の何本か選出された訳である。

Skier’s Choice Awardとは

How We Determine the Best Skis of the Year・どうやって選出しているのか・・・

The Powder Union–consisting of 20 men and 13 women–skied bell to bell for four days. They plundered powder in tight trees and chutes, toured out of bounds, and used proper avalanche protocol to descend consequential lines. They crushed bumps in gullies and bombed hot laps on the oldest race hill in Western Canada.

Testers took notes on every ski they brought out on the hill–eventually delivering nearly 450 individual reviews. All told, the Union spent a collective 1,500 hours testing and discussing skis, a figure that doesn’t include the untold hours that go into producing this guide and our more expansive version online. The Buyer’s Guide on Powder.com includes extended reviews, videos, and interviews with Union members honestly discussing their favorite skis, with zero influence from attending brands

From those categories, we also identified the 13 Skis of the Year–products that received the highest marks across the board from skiers with a host of different backgrounds. These skis were ideal for the steep, forested terrain at Red: They pivoted easily when needed, straightlined through the crux, held tight on the groomers, and kept us charging till the bitter end. Essentially, what you will find in the 2019 Buyer’s Guide are the skis that help make this sport so fun and addictive.——–（POWDER MAG ウェブサイト引用）

POWDER MAGが企画・授与するこの賞は他の賞に比べて、しっかりと審査基準がはっきりとしている。30社も集まるこのイベントは、合計33人からなる本雑誌関係者からなる“POWDER UNION” の男女混合のスキーヤー（男子20,女子13）達が4日間かけてレッドマウンテン・カナダで、一斉に120本のスキーを試乗し、合計450件以上もの各スキーごとのレビュー、約1500時間の試乗時間を費やす、全米最大規模の試乗レポートイベントである。
レッドマウンテンは、オンピス・オフピス、ツリーラン、パウダー、小渓谷、あらゆる場面においてバランスよく滑れてこのようなスキー達をテストするにはとても良い環境だそう。
さらに大事なことは、このPOWDER UNIONのメンバーは公平な評価をするため、スポンサーライダーはいないとのこと。なので、フラットな評価をしていて、どの板も公平に選ばれたと言うことが本サイトを見ても確認できる。
その中でも特に優秀なスキーはベストスキー１３として選出している。総合的には、特に急な森林斜面で、ピボットターンが容易で、バタつかず、整地では安定していて、最後までライダーをサポートできる板というのを評価対象にしている。

各カテゴリーの下に、受賞された今年度モデルのICELANTICの板を紹介しよう。

Icelantic’s Natural 101 is as amazing as the people that run the Colorado-based indie company. It is the perfect blend of hard-charging and playful in a light, durable package. The women’s Mystic 97 has the same construction and shape, but is narrower underfoot.

Icelantic Natural 101 はコロラドに本拠地をおく工場で作られている、プレイフルで、軽く、そして何より頑強な板である。Mystic 97も同じ素材だが、レディースモデルということもあってウェイスト部分が若干細く設計されている。

When picking a touring ski I look for something that will do everything well because you never know what you are going to get into. The 132-millimeter shovel combined with the rocker throughout the first 31 centimeters of the ski float the Natural 101 effortlessly through the pow and keep you above the snow on those deep days skinning to the top of your favorite backcountry line.

私はツアラースキーを選ぶときは、全ての動作においていいパフォーマンスをバランスよく発揮できるような板を選んで乗っている。山で何が起こるか、どんな地形に遭遇するかわからないからね。トップから31cmまでの部分は最大132mm幅のロッカートップ部分のおかげで深いパウダーの日なんかは板の沈み具合を軽減し、ストレスなく好きなラインを滑れるように設計されている。

The 5-millimeters of camber paired with Icelantic’s sustainably sourced, ultra-light Ochroma Core make for awesome edge grip and that extra little bit of energy when you load the ski up and want to blast into that next turn. Last but not least, the perfect amount of tail rocker is what sets this ski apart.

5mm幅のキャンバーは、Icelanticが使用する素材で有名な超軽量バルサコアを採用していて抜群のエッジグリップを発揮している。エッジグリップがタイトな分、次のターンに行く時の切り返しのキレ味がとても気持ちがいい。

You can tell tons of thought went into this ski. The unique tail shape makes putting on and taking off your skins a breeze, while also being able to set an anchor if you are getting extra rowdy.

本当によく考えられた、スキーだ。このユニークなテールシェープに気づく人は気づくと思うけど、ちゃんとスキンを装着・脱着しやすいように設計されている。ちょっと乱暴にそのまま雪にさしてもこのテールなら全然大丈夫。

The durability of the top sheet is second to none, it reminds me of those giant jawbreakers from my childhood, the kind you would lick until your tongue bled, and would take you weeks to finish, these skis will last.

トップシートの耐久性は天下一品。私が子供の頃よく食べていた、JAWBREAKERっていうキャンディーみたい。（アメリカで有名な、めっちゃ硬くて、なかなか溶けないでかい飴玉。舐めても舐めてもなくならない）←アメリカ人のライターがコメントしてるので「とにかくすり減らない、丈夫な」という表現。

The graphic is also perfect for a backcountry ski. The lighter colors help fight off UV rays that would generally ice up a black touring ski. This paired with a sweet mystical bird drawn by co-founder Travis Parr make for cool summer garage art or something to stare at if you ate one too many Scooby Snacks.

さらには、このグラフィックもバックカントリーに行くにはパーフェクトなデザインだ。明るめの板の色は極寒地でも氷結しにくく、紫外線に強い。黒い板は氷結しやすいしね。このミステリアスな鳥と壮大な雪山のデザインを担当しているのが、Icelantic（アイスランティック）共同創立者のTRAVIS PARR氏。「絵画」として楽しむのもありかも。

Bottom line is these skis were the best skis I clicked my boots into all week. They ski amazing in any terrain on the resort or deep in the backcountry.

どのリゾートのテレインも雪深いバックカントリーのフィールドでもいい仕事をしてくれた。

With the new touring bindings skiing as well on the resort as they do off you should ski a ski that does the same. The icing on the cake is these skis are designed and handmade in the USA by skiers who love what they do, and truly care about the sustainability of skiing.

何より、MADE IN THE USAを代表する板であり、そのメンバーは自分たちが好きなことをとことん追求して作っている板だと乗っててわかる。スキーをずっと楽しむための要素が満載だ。

When you click into this ski, you’re not just clicking into a tool, you’re also clicking into a piece of art. That’s a huge part of skiing a pair of Icelantics. All of the graphics are pieces of art by co-founder Travis Parr. But the art is just the first impression. By the end of the day, I got a full picture of the Maidens and the one-ski-quiver they are.

この板に興味がある人はただ単にこれは「板」ではないことに気づいて欲しい。これは「アート」。Icelantic（アイスランティック）のスキーに乗るということはそういうこと。Icelantic の全てのグラフィックを担当しているのはTravis Parr。でも、アートワークは単なる第一印象ということはわかってても、これに乗ってその性能に身震いしたわ。

Lucking out with a 10-inch powder day, I was glad I had this freeride pow ski underfoot. The wide 146-millimeter shovel paired with the tip and tail rocker allowed for amazing floatation in the deep snow and felt easily maneuverable through the dense trees of Interior B.C. Transitioning from the dreamy steep deep lines to the moguled crud of the cat track, that’s so typical of a pow day, the Maidens held their own and offered stability and plenty of stiffness to charge through the chunder unaffected.

たったの30cmパウダーの日でちょっとがっかりだったけど、このパウダーフリーライドスキーに乗っててラッキーだったわ。146mmの太めのトップ、さらに加えてツインチップロッカーのおかげでしっかり浮いて滑れたわ。深雪時だって、操作性抜群のこの板はカナダの密集したツリーランだってへっちゃらだった。急斜面からパウダーの少ない荒れた斜面への移動もなんの影響もなく、容易だったわ。

The Fly-Weight core kept the ski light and the 2-millimeters of camber kept the ski playful and gave you the pop you wanted. Ranging in lengths from 162 to 177 centimeters means that ladies of all heights and shapes have a ski to shred. The Maiden can be your go-to skis on any day and they live up to their reputation as a “hard charging powslayer.” Not only do these skis look good, but they enable you to dominate the mountain as well.

フライウェイトコアのおかげで軽く、2mmキャンバーのおかげでプレイフルでポッピーな板に仕上がっている。162cmから177cmの長さのラインアップは、女性ライダーに対して幅広い選択肢を与えていて素晴らしいわ。
Maidenはあなたの「毎日付き添える一本」でもあり、「パウダーキラー」な板としても活躍するでしょうね。ただ単にデザインがいいわけではなく、この一本で山を支配することだってできちゃうのよ。

A ski with 105 millimeters underfoot is not exactly the ideal choice on a powder day. So it’s magical to discover that the Nomad–a soft all-mountain ride that amusingly pops and butters on the average day–is right at home when it dumps a foot overnight.

アンダーフット105mmの板はパウダー日には最適な板とは言えないだろう。しかし、このNomadはその概念を一気に覆した。ソフト・オールマウンテンスキーで、反発力があり、普通の日でも面白いくらいポッピーで滑らかに操作できる。ドカ雪でもパウダーでも全然へっちゃらだった。

With a large shovel, poplar core, 2 millimeters of camber, and a cushy flex on the rockered tips and tails that generate lots of gentle rebound, the Nomad is a powder surfing sensation. With original artwork on the topsheet evoking scenes of a woodland wilderness, it’s the most attractive graphic on the rack.

大きなトップ形状、軽いポプラ材コア、2mmキャンバー、ツインチップにフレックス性抜群。パウダーサーフィンするならこれは最適だ。さらにはこのトップシートのデザイン。森林がセンスよく描かれているこのデザインは間違いなくこの日のスキーラックの中で一番魅力的だった。

まとめ

Icelantic Skis （アイスランティック）は残念ながらBEST13には選出されなかったが、超大手スキーメーカーと本国では肩を並べているのがわかる。実に本国ではフリーライドスキーが大きなシェアを誇っているのかもわかる情報だ。

さらに、女性モデルがこれだけフィーチャーされているのも、目の付け所だと思う。これだけ大きな評価媒体で、レディースモデルのスキーが2本も表彰されているのにはびっくりだ。
Icelantic SkisのCEOが女性なだけあって、レディーススキーモデルにも力を注いでいるメーカーは珍しく、デザイン性も良くて目のひくデザインが豊富なのも嬉しいところ。

最近は専門誌をあまり書店などであまり見かけなくなった気がする。
ハウツーや最新ギアの情報は、ネットや動画の方がわかりやすく、しかも早くリリースできるし、専門誌らしい本当に深くて良い内容・コンテンツを作るというのは骨を折る作業だからだと思う。

しかしアメリカでは本雑誌のように、どんどんコアになる一方で、ウィンタースポーツをよく知る者を満足させるような内容になっていくのだろう。簡単に言えば、コア層が買って満足する内容をたくさん載せているのがPOWDER MAGのような紙媒体の情報、逆にウェブや動画の方はより一般層にウィンタースポーツの魅力を伝えたり、ハウツーなどサポートする情報メディアが充実した媒体になるのではないかと思う。

日本にはまだまだ知られていない、欧米諸国のウィンタースポーツ情報が満載です。
